The Legacy Chase. It?s more than just a horse race ? it?s a chance to honor Maryland?s historic equine industry in a part of the state that quickly is becoming developed.

“Proceeds from past Legacy Chase events have been helpful in terms of our expansion project at GBMC HealthCare,” said GBMC presidentand chief executive Laurence Merlis. “This year, we will utilize the proceeds to benefit our nursing staff with opportunities for scholarships, enhancements and additional incentives.”

Profits and proceeds from the event benefit GBMC HealthCare, which includes Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Hospice of Baltimore, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Community Health Center and the GBMC Foundation.

Holly Porter, a marketing specialist with MidAtlantic Farm Credit, a sponsor of the race since its inception, said her company enjoys giving a boost to the state’s horse industry and a helping hand to other businesses that join the sponsorship.

“The horse industry is a very important part of Maryland history and Maryland agriculture,” she said. “We?re a business that?s been in business for more than 90 years, and we understand the importance of giving back to the community and helping other businesses gain exposure.”

Fenwick said the Legacy Chase recreates the style of horse racing born more than 350 years ago in the region.

“Racing thoroughbreds over fences in the countryside on a course designed for the layout of the land instead of in a circle in a metropolitan area in the dirt is the way racing started in this area and is being continued here,” he said.

“The day includes competitive timber racing, family activities and concessions … and most especially, an enjoyable day in the country,” said race chairman Charles C. Fenwick Jr.
