Trial date set for man accused of stabbing wife

The man accused of beating and stabbing his estranged wife using a “machete-type weapon” will go on trial for attempted first-degree murder Oct. 10, according to a Monday scheduling conference at the Howard County Circuit Court.

Police allege that Frederick Jones, 53, of Columbia, stabbed his estranged wife in the head, face and hands in a domestic assault outside a Columbia apartment complex May 1.

The woman, who had a restraining order against Jones, was discharged from the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after spending nearly two weeks in the hospital because of the incident.

Police said Jones stopped the assault after a witness yelled his name and told him to stop.

Jones is currently incarcerated at the Howard County Detention Center.

Howard County police respond to an average of 7.5 domestic violence calls per day, according to the county?s Domestic Violence Center.
