CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — President Teresa Sullivan is defending her performance during her short tenure at the University of Virginia.
Sullivan told the Board of Visitors Monday that she has worked to adopt needed changes at U.Va. since she took office in August 2010. She said she and the board apparently disagreed with “how that change should occur and at what pace.”
She discussed some key aspects of her strategy of measured change at U.Va. in light of financial challenges, including the loss of state funding. She contrasted that with the board’s demand for what she called high-risk “sweeping action.”
In remarks provided to reporters after the closed meeting, she noted that “corporate-style, top-down leadership does not work in a great university. Sustained change with buy-in does work.”
Sullivan will step down Aug. 15.
