One dead in officer-involved shooting in Fairfax County

One person died after a police-involved shooting in Fairfax County, authorities said.

About 11:20 p.m. Sunday, two police officers saw two males acting suspiciously in the area of Frye Road and Madge Lane in the Mount Vernon area.

When the officers approached, one of the males fled. The officers pursued him, and an altercation ensued, said Officer Shelley Broderick, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman.

Police said the suspect displayed a handgun and fired shots toward the officers, and one of the officers fired back. The male was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead, Broderick said.

Neither of the officers required medical attention.
