School is back in session and that means the American University volleyball team will conduct its annual Bender Blue Out, an increasingly popular event which has drawn a D.C. collegiate volleyball attendance record four of the past five years. The Eagles highlight the annual D.C. Volleyball Challenge with their match against Georgetown Friday at 7.

The night opens with the All-American Barbecue on the quad at 5. Doors to Bender Arena open at 6 with a pregame fan fest with smoothies, face painting, sign making, and unveiling of the banner for the Patriot League defending champions, who have won 10 of the last 11 conference titles and advanced to the NCAA tournament 12 times in the last 15 seasons.

Top returnees include Patriot League player and rookie of the year Sara Rishell, all-league senior Rebecca Heath, second-team choice Monika Smidova, and preseason all-league choice Juliana Crum.

The D.C. Volleyball Challenge continues on Saturday at 1 p.m. with George Mason playing Georgetown. It wraps up Saturday night with a match between GMU and AU. American has won nine of 15 D.C. Volleyball Challenges and three of the last five (2007, 2008, 2010).
