On this day, July 31, in 1977, Son of Sam killed his final victims shortly after getting a parking ticket that placed him at the crime scene.

For a year, David Berkowitz terrorized New York City, killing six people and sending letters to police and newspapers: “I am the Son of Sam. I love to hunt, prowling the streets looking for fair game.”

Investigators learned that Berkowitz got a ticket around the time of the final slayings, and went to his house hoping to find a witness. Instead they saw a machine gun in his car.

Berkowitz greeted the police saying, “You got me. What took you so long?”

Berkowitz claimed that he was controlled by a demon-possessed dog. He was sentenced to 300 years.
