TAMPA, Fla. – Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, famous for giving short and focused responses to questions, has found his home in the social media. The former high school coach has created a Twitter account, where thoughts are limited to 140 characters.
Without any fanfare, Hastert began tweeting on August 24 to announce that he would be joining the Illinois delegation at the Republican National Committee. “Stay tuned for updates,” he typed. He’s tweeted three other times, each to highlight political stories.
Asked why he joined, Hastert tweeted “I believe.”
Associates said that a rogue account @Speakerhastert is on Twitter and been inactive for a year, but pleas to Twitter to take it down have gone unanswered. The real Hastert account is @Speaker_Hastert (note the underscore).
For his profile he describes himself as the “longest serving Republican Speaker of the U.S. House; Senior Advisor at Dickstein Shapiro LLP; Teacher; Husband; Dad; and Grandfather.”
