Israeli AG orders Netanyahu ‘inquiry’

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit opened an “inquiry” pertaining to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his office announced Sunday.

“It should be emphasised that this is an inquiry and that no criminal investigation has been launched regarding the prime minister,” the announcement said, per Reuters.

Mandelblit’s office didn’t reveal any details about the investigation. Netanyahu denied any wrongdoing. “As happened in all previous cases, accusations attributed to Prime Minister Netanyahu’s actions turned out to be baseless,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office said. “Again here they will find nothing because there is nothing.”

Israeli media reports have raised the possibility of probes on a number of issues, ranging from accusations of money laundering in his family to claims that Netanyahu was paid to campaign on behalf of a French government official. Investigators have also been reviewing whether he double-billed Israeli taxpayers for travel when he held lower-ranking government posts.

“Every time I make a historic visit abroad we hear about investigations,” Netanyahu told reporters Monday evening. “It’s nonsense.”
