A former bookkeeper for a landscaping company was sentenced to nearly four years in prison for embezzling $1.3 million from his employer.
Christopher Cunningham, 46, who fled to Spain in 2010 to avoid criminal charges in Montgomery County, was extradited to the United States last year and pleaded guilty in federal court in D.C.
Cunningham used the company’s computerized bookkeeping system to write 263 checks to himself over five years, prosecutors said. He altered the company’s bank statements to disguise the fact that he wrote checks to himself and wrote checks to others to pay for his debts.
