Alfred Regnery, who built up the family publishing business into one of the conservative movement’s most influential voices, is getting back into books.

Regnery has teamed with longtime industry executive Eric Kampmann to launch Republic Book Publishers.

They plan to publish 12 “somewhat controversial and edgy” books a year and hope to develop new and young conservative writers, Regnery said.

Regnery, who headed Regnery Publishing for years and was publisher of the American Spectator, had over two dozen New York Times best-sellers on his watch.

“Books make a difference,” he said, adding, “We know what we’re doing.”

They are already offering three books, including The Case Against Single Payer by Chris Jacobs.

Republic will be a nonprofit company, akin to a university press. They are hosting a launch party this month.

The company is named in part for Plato’s Republic and Benjamin Franklin’s quip that the founding fathers hoped to create “a republic, if you can keep it.”
