Scoring twice in the final eleven minutes of regulation, the Washington Freedom came back from two goals down to salvage a 3-3 with St. Louis Athletica in front of a season-high 5,149 at Maryland SoccerPlex.
French midfielder Sonia Bompastor, at 5-foot-4 the Freedom’s smallest starter, scored Washington’s first and third goals with her head, with the game-tying effort coming in the 90th minute.
Brazilian midfielder Daniela led St. Louis (0-1-3) with two goals, but was carried off the field after suffering a serious injury, immediately after the Freedom (1-2-2) pulled to within 3-2 on a Lisa DeVanna header in the 79th minute.
After Daniela opening the scoring in the seventh minute, Bompastor tied the game on a cross from Jill Gilbeau. The Brazilian then scored a stunning goal from 25 yards to give St. Louis a 2-1 advantage at halftime, and teammate Eniola Aluko made it 3-1 in the 69th minute.
