Obama: Sexism a hurdle to electing Clinton

President Obama suggested Tuesday that sexism may be preventing men from supporting Hillary Clinton for president.

“I just want to say to the guys out there – I want to be honest… y’know, there’s a reason why we haven’t had a woman president before,” Obama said during a campaign rally in Ohio. “I want every man out there who’s voting to kind of look inside yourself and ask yourself if you’re having problems with this stuff, how much of it is that we’re just not used to it?”

He empathized with men who may not be “used to” seeing women in powerful positions, and explained that sexism sometimes can be deep-seated.

“So that, like, when a guy is ambitious and out in the public arena and working hard, well, that’s okay; but when a woman suddenly does it suddenly you’re all like, well, why is she doing that?” he said.

“I’m just being honest,” Obama continued. “I want you to think about it, because she is so much better qualified than the other guy. She has conducted herself so much better in public than the other guy, that this notion that somehow, oh, you know, this is hard to choose – it shouldn’t be.”

Obama urged people to reject cynicism and elect Hillary Clinton during a campaign stop for his former secretary of State in Columbus, Ohio.
