E-mail implies escort details routine for D.C. police

It is apparently routine for the D.C. police department to provide escorts to “any and everybody,” according to an e-mail from the commander in charge of the department’s special operation division.

The e-mail was sent by Hilton Burton to other members of his division after police Chief Cathy Lanier’s spokeswoman asked Burton for details on a police escort on April 19 for actor Charlie Sheen on his way to a performance at DAR Constitution Hall. The spokeswoman was responding to requests for information regarding the escort by members of the media.

“This is why we should not do escorts for any and everybody,” Burton wrote in the e-mail dated Wednesday.

Sheen posted a picture on Twitter last week showing a speedometer registering 80 mph. Lanier has said policies appear to have been violated.
