A Joppatowne woman was charged with murder after she allegedly stabbed her husband to death with a kitchen knife during an argument, according to the Harford County Sheriff?s Office.

Eveline Anna Marie Bergmann, 46, and Jeffrey David Bergmann, 48, of the 600 block of Anchor Drive in the Rumsey Island section of southern Harford, spent Thursday night drinking in a Baltimore-area bar, said Lt. Jim Eyler, a spokesman for the Sheriff?s Office.

An alcohol-induced argument occurred after they got home, Eyler said.

“It was over past relationships,” he said.

According to the charging documents, the couple arrived home about 8 p.m. Thursday. As their argument escalated, she grabbed the knife, stabbed her husband several times in the chest and shoulders, then began to throw things at him. She then “picked the knife up again and cut him again.”

Court records also say that Eveline Bergmann then noticed her husband was “pale and slumped over,” so she called a relative in Wisconsin, who advised her to call 911.

Eyler said Bergmann admitted to the crime when deputies arrived after she called 911 shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday. Jeffrey Bergmann was transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital in Baltimore, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:30 a.m.

A next-door neighbor who said she had worked as a domestic-violence counselor expressed surprise at the homicide.

“It amazes me that I did that for eight years and I didn?t pick up on any of the signs,” Kerri Sprouse said. The couple had reputations for quick tempers, she said, but there was no indication of violence. Neither appeared to have a criminal record in Maryland.

Eyler said Harford County Animal Control took custody of the couple?s two dogs.

Eveline Bergmann is being held on no bond at the Harford County Detention Center, awaiting a bail hearing Monday.

Eyler said out of four homicides in Harford this year, Bergmann?s death is the first domestic-related homicide.
