The Examiner made a $500 donation to the St. John’s College High School scholarship fund on Sunday at theannual DC Sportsfan Football Celebration dinner.
The event, held at George Mason University’s Dewberry Hall, honored football players from the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, the Interstate Athletic Conference and the District of Columbia Interscholastic Athletic Association who were named first-team or second-team all-stars by the Web site DCSportsfan.com.
The Examiner’s scholarship was given in the name of St. John’s senior defensive back/wide receiver Antwon Bailey, who was named the newspaper’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the dinner.
Bailey, a first-team All-Examiner selection, rushed for 1,356 yards and scored 23 touchdowns to help the Cadets to an 8-3 record and a WCAC playoff berth. He posted a 3.9 GPA for this academic year and has a cumulative GPA of 3.5. Bailey has earned a football scholarship to Syracuse.
“I am real happy to receive an award like this, especially because, growing up, my mother always stressed the importance of academics,” said Bailey. “Football isn’t going to last forever.”
Former Redskins general manager Charley Casserly and University of Virginia football coach Al Groh were guest speakers at the event.
