Sims, Marks part of tonight’s UFL on Versus first ever broadcast

Tonight on Versus at 9pm California Redwoods at Las Vegas Locos

Well tonight the United Football League takes its first step toward becoming a real league.

The game between California and Las Vegas marks the start of a brand new football operation with lofty goals.

One thing that the UFL did right was put together a very solid broadcast team with some of the best sportscasters on television.

Dave Sims one of the best play by play men in the business who has a long and impressive resume that includes the NFL Sunday Night Game of the Week where he does the broadcasts on Westwood One CBS Radio.

Sims told me from Las Vegas: “I’ve been so wrapped up in preparing for the shows that until now I hadn’t really thought about any historical significance. This is a bold and fabulous opportunity and we plan on making the most of it. The UFL is feeding the fans fervor for more football and it’s perfect TV programming. I’m psyched and ready to go.”

He will be joined in the booth by Doug Flutie who knows a little bit about non NFL projects since he played both in the CFL and USFL. Flutie has done a fine job on his work at ESPN as analyst.

The sidelines will be covered by Anita Marks the first woman broadcaster to have played football. Marks was a quarterback in the women’s professional football league with both the Miami Fury and the Florida Stingrays. Marks is a popular radio sports talk show host in Baltimore where her afternoon drive time show is one the markets most listened to programs.

She told me what tonight means to her: “”I’m thrilled to be a part of the UFL inaugural season…I couldn’t ask to be associated with a better broadcast team with Dave, Doug, and Kordell…the exciting aspect of the UFL telecast is that it is going to take the football fan places they have never been before…in the locker room for the first 4 minutes of halftime…and right on the sideline to talk to a player after scoring a TD…the broadcast is going to be a lot of fun.”
Rounding out the team is former NFL quarterback Kordell Stewart who will also serve as a sideline reporter.
