‘Where is the uprising?’: McCarthy compares Twitter censorship to Chinese repression

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) compared censorship of Twitter to the actions of the Chinese Communist Party, adding that social media sites have become the “arms of the Democratic Party.”

McCarthy, the GOP nominee to become the next speaker, will unveil a select committee on China this week that will “look at every single industry that China has us leveraged in.”

“This is going to be a committee of Republicans and Democrats alike focused so we have one policy, one mission to confront China of what they have been trying to do to America and rule the world,” McCarthy said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures.

McCarthy highlighted the so-called Twitter Files of internal communications Twitter CEO Elon Musk is releasing to journalists as a glimpse into Big Tech censorship efforts for political reasons. The files showed messages between Twitter employees showing certain posts that had been flagged by members of the Biden administration or the Democratic National Committee, including the scandal surrounding Hunter Biden‘s laptop.

Journalist Matt Taibbi released the files on Friday night, pointing specifically to a section of the Twitter Files that showed Democratic lawmakers pushing for more moderation on the platform, arguing that the First Amendment is “not absolute.”

“What Elon Musk has been able to do, now we know why the White House wanted to fight so strongly against him owning Twitter,” McCarthy said. “All he’s done is put out the truth. Now we need to start looking at Facebook, at Google. These now have become arms of the Democratic Party, arms of the Biden administration.”

McCarthy said people should not dismiss Twitter censorship as “just about President Trump,” whom Musk recently let back on Twitter.

“No, it’s about America itself,” McCarthy said. “They go after each and every person that questions them. Look at what they’re doing to Elon Musk and the successes that he’s had. He’s not doing anything but putting out papers that he has found.”

He said the public is discovering that the government used businesses, such as Twitter, to “control what we could find out, what we can say, what — whether we could even forward or retweet.”

“How is this different than what’s happening in China today, where they try to control every single person?” McCarthy said. “Where is the uprising in this?”

Musk said he plans to release more internal communications relating to conversations between Twitter and the DNC in the future.

McCarthy pointed to the leadership of fellow California Rep. Adam Schiff (D), who had previously stated the information released on Hunter Biden’s laptop was part of a Russian disinformation scheme, on the House Intelligence Committee.

“They used every arm, not only just of the government, but they have taken over businesses to lie to the American public,” McCarthy said of the censorship. “This is just the beginning. And this is why we have got to be ready to go on January 3, from the very beginning. All this will be held up if we don’t get it right.”
