Trump marvels at how Capitol Police helped take down heavily armed baseball shooter

President Trump on Thursday expressed gratitude to lawmakers and police officers for how they handled the shooting last week at a Republican baseball practice.

“A lot of brave members [of Congress] acted in moments of danger, they protected each other, they cared for the wounded, they shielded the vulnerable, and they really did put their own safety aside,” Trump said in remarks Thursday night to attendees of the White House’s annual congressional picnic, which included both Republicans and Democrats.

Trump went on to thank Capitol Police Officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner, who were both hurt in the incident as they helped to subdue the shooter, James Hodgkinson, who was killed.

In thanking the officers, Trump marveled that they were able to help take down Hodkinson even though the gunman was heavily armed.

“And you know, agents Griner and Bailey, they came rushing in from the outfield,” Trump said. “Somebody [Hodkinson] with a rifle — and they [the officers] had handguns. And that’s not a good deal. But one of those bullets struck at the right place and that was really incredible. Or that would have been a far worse morning, believe me.”

Trump also said he was amazed by the recovery of Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., who remains hospitalized in fair condition after being wounded in the shooting.

The president said Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, and their children, Harrison and Madison, attended the picnic. Scalise’s children were given a tour of the White House.

Trump closed his remarks by calling for Democrats and Republicans to unite after the tragedy.

“It’s our hope this unity that was displayed that evening can maybe continue and thrive between Republicans and Democrats,’ Trump said. “I think honestly we would all be doing a lot better and I know the country would be doing a lot better.”
