FLORIDA JUDGE MUST DECIDE WHETHER TO DELAY MAP FIX
A Florida judge is being asked to decide when the state’s congressional districts will be redrawn. Circuit Judge Terry Lewis is holding a hearing Thursday to consider what steps to take since ruling that current districts are illegal because they were drawn to benefit the Republican Party. Legislative leaders say they will redraw the districts, but they want to wait until after the 2014 elections.
2ND FLORIDA SHERIFF’S DEPUTY FACES JAIL IN PONZI CASE
A second former Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy is facing prison time for falsely arresting a woman as part of a $1.2 billion Ponzi scheme operated by a disbarred lawyer. A sentencing hearing is set Thursday for Jeff Poole, who pleaded guilty to a civil rights conspiracy charge in May. Poole faces up to 10 years in prison but will likely get less because he cooperated with prosecutors.
LANDMARK MIAMI RESTAURANT CLOSES ITS DOORS
A landmark restaurant that was the first to integrate in Miami is closing its doors. Jumbo’s Restaurant served its final plates of fried chicken and soul food on Wednesday. During segregation, black customers were forced to order from the back of restaurants, including at Jumbo’s. But in 1967, the restaurant became the first to hire black employees and soon became a community staple for customers of all races.
RED-NECKED STINT MAKES RARE APPEARANCE IN KEYS
A shorebird that breeds in Siberian Asia and parts of western Alaska has made a rare appearance in the Florida Keys. Swedish biologist Viktor Nilsson-Ortman spotted the red-necked stint last week near Naval Air Station Key West while he was out looking for nighthawks and mangrove cuckoos. He recognized the red-throated bird because he had seen many of them while working in Siberia on a survey of breeding birds.
TRAPPER CALLED TO SOUTHWEST FLORIDA COMMUNITY OVER WILD HOGS
After wild hogs spent months tearing through lawns and common areas, costing homeowners hundreds of dollars, some southwest Florida officials have hired a trapper to remediate the hog havoc. About five homes and several common areas in the Lakewood Ranch community near Bradenton have been hit by hogs in the last few weeks.
