Florida’s leading newspaper says that if Marco Rubio hates his job in the Senate so much, he should resign and let Florida be represented by someone who wants to be there.
The Florida Sun Sentinel was reacting to reports that Rubio “hates” being in the Senate, which might explain why Rubio has missed so many votes.
“If you hate your job, senator, follow the honorable lead of House Speaker John Boehner and resign it,” the editorial board wrote. “Let us elect someone who wants to be there and earn an honest dollar for an honest day’s work. Don’t leave us without one of our two representatives in the Senate for the next 15 months or so.”
Since embarking on the campaign trail, Rubio has been noticeably absent from his senate duties and has skipped many votes. When asked about this on CNN this past Sunday, Rubio stated that he is “not missing votes because I’m on vacation…I’m running for president so that the votes they take in the Senate are actually meaningful again.”
But the Florida paper argued that Florida taxpayers are not paying Rubio $174,000 per year to represent them in the Senate for him to blow them off in Washington.
Both Sens. Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders are running for office while serving in the Senate, but both candidates have only missed ten votes during their run for the White House. Rubio, on the other hand, has missed 59.
The Floridian newspaper claims that by missing so many votes Rubio can “get the publicity, perks and pay that go with the position [ of senator] — without doing the work — you are taking advantage of us.”
“Your job is to represent Floridians in the Senate,” the board said. “Either do your job, Sen. Rubio, or resign it.”
