How confident are Americans that there won’t be voter fraud?

Despite Donald Trump’s claims that the election is going to be rigged, a majority of Americans have confidence in the 2016 election result’s integrity.

According to a new Gallup poll, 62 percent of Americans think election results will be “accurately cast and counted.”

That figure is up 3 percentage points from 2008, the last time Gallup polled the question. But those numbers are down significantly from the mid-2000s when Gallup found that more than 70 percent of Americans were confident in election accuracy — even after the hanging chad debacle of 2000.

Trump’s accusations of a rigged election seem to be catching on with Republicans. Only 50 percent of self-identified Republicans are somewhat or very confident that the vote counts will be accurate. In 2008, 57 percent of Republicans said the same. That number peaked in 2006, when 92 percent of Republicans were confident in election accuracy.

In 2016, independents and Democrats are more confident than Republicans that the election results will be accurate. About 59 percent of independents say votes will be accurately cast and counted. About 77 percent of Democrats say the same.
