A defiant Robert De Niro vowed this week to continue with his verbal attacks on President Trump following his calling the U.S. leader an educated “idiot.”
“Now I’m not trying to turn this nonpolitical event into a political one, but as long as our country’s leadership is so appalling and so corrupt, I’ll be speaking out at every venue,” De Niro told attendees at a Democratic fundraiser in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.
“To be silent in the face of such villainy is to be complicit, and it’s especially appropriate tonight because Trump treats education as a con, a way to make a profit at the expense of the suckers,” the actor continued, according to a Thursday report of the Tuesday evening event.
Just his mentioning of the name of Trump — who was in San Diego, Calif., Tuesday — prompted a negative reaction from at least one audience member.
“Don’t boo, baby. This is for real. We have to do something about it,” he responded.
Earlier in the day, De Niro referred to Trump as a stupid man despite his graduating from an Ivy League school.
“A college education is important, but education without humanity is ignorance,” he told attendees at an event for higher education organization, Fulfillment Fund. “Look at our president. He made it through University of Pennsylvania, so he was exposed to a quality education, but he’s still an idiot.”
