Massachusetts voters prefer Biden, Sanders over Warren in 2020 primary: Poll

Massachusetts voters prefer former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., over Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., in the 2020 Democratic primary, a new poll says.

Nineteen percent of voters backed Biden, 14 percent backed Sanders, and 11 percent backed Warren, according to a poll conducted by the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Meanwhile, 27 percent of voters indicated they were undecided.

Although 23 percent of male voters said they would cast their ballot for Biden and 13 percent said they would vote for Sanders, the margin was slimmer among female voters: 15 percent each said they supported Biden and Warren, and 14 percent were in favor of Sanders.

“While Sen. Warren has emerged as a front runner for the Democratic nomination, she trails both Sen. Sanders and former Vice President Biden in her own state. If she wants to win the White House, she will have to tend to her own backyard,” Tatishe Nteta, associate professor of political science and director of the UMass Poll.

Last month, 56 percent of registered voters said they would not support Warren if she ran for president, according to a poll from the Western New England University Polling Institute.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst poll was conducted from Nov. 7-14 with a sample size of 750 Massachusetts voters. The poll’s margin of error is 4.1 percent.

Other potential 2020 Democratic candidates include Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, and others.
