United picks one of five Terps drafted

Rockville native Rodney Wallace was picked in the first round by D.C. United as five Maryland Terrapins were selected in the first two rounds of the 2009 Major League Soccer SuperDraft in St. Louis.

Wallace, a 20-year-old left-sided sophomore, was chosen sixth overall by D.C., which then added UC Santa Barbara midfielder/forward Chris Pontius with the seventh overall selection.

“I just remember growing up and going to games [at RFK Stadium],” said Wallace, who went to Bullis Prep. “When D.C. United would score a goal, the stadium would just go crazy and the fans would blow up. It’s good atmosphere to be around, and I want to be a part of that.”

Maryland junior defender Omar Gonzalez was taken by Los Angeles with the third overall pick. The Galaxy then added Gonzalez’s backline partner at Maryland, senior defender A.J. Delagarza, in the second round (19th overall).

Annandale native Michael Lahoud (Wake Forest) was also a first-rounder, picked ninth by Chivas USA, followed by Maryland junior Jeremy Hall, who was taken by New York at 11. Terps M/F Graham Zusi was picked 23rd by Kansas City while George Mason senior forward Kwame Adjeman-Pamboe was picked in the second round (28th overall) by Colorado.

D.C. United added Loyola goalkeeper Milos Kocic and Wake Forest defender Lyle Adams in the second round, and St. Louis midfielder Brandon Barklage in the third round.
