Shaquille O’Neal jokes about gorillas freaking out whenever he visits the zoo

It seems even gorillas are intimidated by Shaquille O’Neal.

The former basketball star was speaking with his guests on the podcast The Big Podcast with Shaq when he contemplated growing his hair out, joking that he would be a “silverback” gorilla and not a “silver fox.” He then told what he claimed was a “true story” about how he has been to “every zoo in the world” and that during all of his visits, the gorillas get intimidated by him.

“For real, for real,” O’Neal said. “That’s how they look at me. They also look at me like, ‘What am I doing in here and you out there?’ And they always go crazy when they see me.”

O’Neal stands at 7 feet, 1 inch tall, and he weighs over 300 pounds.

Ron Magill, the communications director for Zoo Miami, spoke on the podcast and confirmed O’Neal’s story.

Magill said that when the zoo’s gorilla sees O’Neal, he “thinks that Shaq is going to take away his girls” and “gets tight-lipped” and will “make himself look as big as possible.”

“But at the end of the day, he backs off,” Magill said. “He knows who’s boss.”
