Trump: US on ‘alert’ for terrorism after Spain attacks

President Trump said Friday that the federal government is on the alert for possible terrorist attacks in the wake of two car attacks in Spain this week.

“Homeland Security and law enforcement are on alert & closely watching for any sign of trouble,” he tweeted. “Our borders are far tougher than ever before.”

Trump also took a shot at Democrats for making it harder to secure the border.

“The obstructionist Democrats make security for our country very difficult,” he tweeted. “They use the courts and associated delay at all times. Must stop!”

“Radical Islamic terrorism must be stopped by whatever means necessary!” he added. “The courts must give us back our protective rights. Have to be tough!”

The Trump administration issued a notice on Thursday urging Americans in Spain to follow local instructions in the wake of the attack, but gave no indication that there was a higher threat alert in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying it was getting updates about the attack, and was ready to help Spanish authorities.

“We will not let terrorism become the new normal,” DHS said. “Instead, such acts of violence only harden our resolve to fight back against violent extremists, bring them to justice, and dismantle their networks.”

“DHS will continue its efforts to raise the baseline of our security across the board and to work with foreign partners to help them do the same,” it said.
