House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed President Trump’s administration only hours after dozens of ballistic missiles launched by the Iranian government struck the Al Asad air base in Anbar province, Iraq.
“Closely monitoring the situation following bombings targeting U.S. troops in Iraq,” the California Democrat tweeted. “We must ensure the safety of our servicemembers, including ending needless provocations from the Administration and demanding that Iran cease its violence. America & world cannot afford war.”
Iran’s government claimed responsibility for the attacks only days after Iran’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed “revenge” for the killings of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al Muhandis.
Pelosi launched an impeachment investigation into the president after a July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The House of Representatives passed two articles of impeachment for obstruction of Congress and abuse of power, making Trump only the third president to be impeached.
Pelosi has stalled sending the articles to the Senate for trial until she accepts terms from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
