Police are investigating how a 61-year-old District man was struck by a Metro train.

The incident happened around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday at the Metro Center station in downtown D.C.  The man, from Northwest Washington, was taken to the George Washington Hospital Center and remained in serious condition this morning.

An investigation is ongoing. After talking  to witnesses and reviewing surveillance camera video, detectives believe the man intentionally jumped in in the path of the train, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel.

He was the first person struck by a Metro train in 2012. Last year, 13 people were hit by Metro trains, nine fatally. Of the 13 victims, nine apparently jumped on purpose. Seven of the nine jumpers were killed.
