Trump faces enthusiasm gap in Texas

Donald Trump is statistically tied with Hillary Clinton in Texas with fewer than two weeks before Election Day, and has a major problem with enthusiasm among Republican voters, according to a new poll.

Trump leads Clinton by 3 percentage points, 45-42, in a new University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll that has a 3.16 percentage point margin of error. Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson polled at 7 percent and the Green Party’s Jill Stein got just 2 percent.

While Trump clings to a thin lead, the poll shows Trump’s supporters in Texas are overwhelmingly unenthusiastic. A majority of Trump supporters surveyed, 53 percent, said their vote could be better explained as not wanting Clinton to win, while 47 percent of his supporters said they want him to be president.

“The lack of enthusiasm amongst Republicans is remarkable,” said Joshua Blank, who supervised the poll, to the Texas Tribune.

The University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll surveyed 1,200 registered voters, including 959 likely voters, online from Oct.14-23. Early voting in the Lone Star State began on Oct. 24. The poll had an overall margin of error of 2.83 percentage points, while the likely voter sample’s margin of error is 3.16 percentage points.
