Maryland Senate passes same-sex marriage

The Maryland Senate passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage Thursday evening in a 25-22 vote, following the state House of Delegates’ passage of the same bill Friday night.

The bill now goes to Gov. Martin O’Malley, who proposed the bill and has committed to sign it into law, making Maryland the eighth state to legalize same-sex unions.

Opponents of the bill — which is not set to take effect until January — have promised to petition it and get it on the November ballot.
