At least 64 shot and 11 dead during another bloody Chicago weekend

Residents of Chicago experienced another bloody weekend with 64 people shot, 11 fatally, between Friday night and Sunday.

Among the 64 shot were six teenagers, one of whom, 15-year-old Terrance Malden, died of his injuries.

“I’m sick of it. I’m tired of it. We talk about Black Lives Matter, but I’m sick and tired of what’s going on in these streets,” Erikka Gordon, Malden’s aunt, said. Police officers so far have not made an arrest in the case.

One man, 41, was found dead in an alley in Park Manor after he was shot in the back and chest Saturday. No arrests have been made in his case.

Another victim, a 27-year-old man, was shot in the head Saturday morning while he was stopped in traffic. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and no suspects have been arrested in the case.

A 33-year-old woman was shot in the chest and died while she was standing with a group of people Sunday morning on Chicago’s South Side. She was pronounced dead from a shot to the chest. No arrests have been made. Two others were injured by the gunfire but are in fair condition, according to a local ABC affiliate.

Chicago’s Independence Day weekend also brought at least 17 deaths and 89 shootings. A 7-year-old girl was among those shot and killed.

“Tonight, a 7-year-old girl in Austin joined a list of teenagers and children whose hopes and dreams were ended by the barrel of a gun,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement after the girl’s death. “As families gather to commemorate the founding of our nation, we must ask ourselves: Is this who we are as a city or as a country? We cannot grow numb to this. We are making progress in slowing shootings, but we have to do better, every single one of us.”

Shootings have spiked in recent weeks in the city, including on Father’s Day, when more than 100 people were shot and 15 people died.

Chicago police have reported a spike in murders and shootings this year compared to 2019. Shootings increased by 71% in May compared to the year before, when 409 people were shot. Murders were up 60%, with 85 reported.
