Remains found by California authorities identified as man missing for 15 years

California authorities identified the remains of a missing California resident 15 years after the man’s disappearance.

Detective Sergeant Luis Espinoza announced on Saturday the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office identified human remains belonging to David Virgil Neily, who was first reported missing in May 2006 at the age of 69. His remains were first discovered in a forested area in Branscomb, California, on May 7, 2020. After a 17-month endeavor, including DNA extraction, a match was made to an active Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Missing Persons Investigation, the sheriff’s office said on Saturday.

“Our dad’s remains were identified,” Neily’s daughter, Lisa, wrote on a Facebook page about her father’s disappearance. “I love you dad and I’m so sorry.”

Neily had a history of mental illness and being out of contact with his family members for extended periods of time, the sheriff’s office said. His last known contact with one of his family members was in mid-April 2006, according to the sheriff’s office.

No evidence of trauma was identified or observed on Neily’s remains, according to authorities. But his daughter wrote on social media that she believes there is a chance foul play may have been involved.
