Cambodian prime minister tests positive for COVID-19 after Biden meeting

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen tested positive for COVID-19 days after hosting world leaders, including President Joe Biden, for a series of intergovernmental summits in the capital of Phnom Penh.

A maskless Biden had a bilateral meeting with Hun, the chairman of this year’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, last weekend before sitting beside him during Saturday’s East Asia Summit Gala Dinner. They also attended the same ASEAN and East Asia summit working sessions and stood together for the traditional “family photograph” with other heads of government.

Biden tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday morning local time, according to the White House, which added that Hun is not considered “a close contact,” per guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hun disclosed his diagnosis earlier Tuesday on Facebook, saying it was “lucky” he missed a G-20 sideline dinner hosted Monday by French President Emmanuel Macron. But he downplayed the development, describing it as “no strange phenomenon,” according to a translation.

Biden tested positive and quarantined for COVID-19 twice in July and received a dose of the updated vaccine last month.

The president is attending the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
