GRAY MARKET: Roughly a quarter-million people in New Delhi make their living going door-to-door collecting and sorting waste or buying the most valuable trash and reselling it to recyclers.

TRASH TO TREASURE: Delhi is experimenting with power plants fueled by garbage. One plant is running on a pilot basis, and two others are under construction. Combined, they would generate enough electricity to power 50,000 homes.

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS: Environmentalists have joined the ragpickers in opposing the trash-to-energy plan, saying incineration is neither clean nor renewable energy.
