Man identified in Bristol, Tenn., shooting was reportedly targeting police officers

Authorities released the name of a man currently in custody for shootings along the Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, Tenn.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Lakeem Keon Scott, 27, may have been motivated in his shootings because he was upset by recent police brutality incidents against black individuals.

Scott, who is black, first opened fire around 2:20 a.m. Thursday through the window of the Days Inn. He also indiscriminately fired shots at several vehicles driving on the Volunteer Parkway before Bristol Police Department officers confronted him. He fired at the three responding offers before return fire struck him.

According to WCYB, Scott remains in serious but stable condition at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

One women was killed while driving her vehicle. A female Days Inn employee was seriously wounded, but is in stable condition at BRMC. Another male was wounded from flying glass during the gunfire exchange, and Officer Matthew Cousins sustained a superficial leg wound. Cousins has since been released from the hospital.

All of those shot were white.

The gunman allegedly told authorities he was troubled by racial incidents nationwide, but the investigation is ongoing into his exact motive.

The FBI is also helping to investigate. There is no public safety threat to the Bristol community, officials say, as it appears he acted alone.

Scott has not yet been charged.
