Sixteen teenagers were arrested and 18 students were injured after a fight broke out at Cardozo High School on Tuesday morning, D.C. police said.
Officers responded to the Columbia Heights school at about 11:30 a.m., and the school was put on lockdown soon thereafter.
The fight stemmed from an earlier incident in which a female student’s hair weave was pulled out, police said. Police said 13 students were treated for minor injuries and five students were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The school went on lockdown at 12:15 p.m. and authorities remained on the scene for hours trying to piece together the events that led to the fight.
The students arrested have been charged with assault and disorderly conduct. Their names have not been released.
