Longtime Democrat Toby Keith donates to Perry

In spite of his longtime identification with the Democratic Party, country music superstar Toby Keith donated $2500 to Rick Perry last quarter according to FEC records.

Keith reportedly was a lifelong Democrat until registering as an Independent in 2009.

The country singer discussed politics on Mike Huckabee’s Fox News show on Sunday.

“I’ve always perceived you an American song writer, not right wing or left wing, not so much a Democrat or a Republican thought you’ve identified describe yourself yourself pretty much as a life long Democrat but really not that into politics.” Huckabee said to Keith during the interview.

“No, not at all,” said Keith, who said he came from a family of Southern Democrats, “There’s never been, as far as I know, before me ever a Republican anywhere in my family.”

In 2007, Keith seemed reluctant to donate to political canidates in spite of his verbal support of George W. Bush.

“It’s amazing how many Republicans call me for support. And then they go, ‘You’re a Republican right?’ And you go, ‘Well I’m actually a lifetime Democrat,'” he said. “And then they go, ‘Oh, sorry.’ And the Democrats want so bad — the real liberals really want to hate me. And then they go, ‘I still hate you, but I can’t believe you’re a Democrat.’ So I’m not a real political guy. I’m a very patriotic guy.”
