State of Play:
Sen. Arlen Specter, a perennially moderate party-switching Democrat, has two obstacles on his way to a sixth Senate term. If he can navigate past Rep. Joe Sestak, a Democrat challenging him from his Left, then he will face his old nemesis, conservative former Rep. Pat Toomey, R, who nearly defeated him in the 2004 Republican primary. Toomey, whose lead in the polls scared Specter out of the GOP last spring, began 2010 as the favorite.
Primary election: May 18
