Imagine being the biggest clown in a conversation that includes 2020 GOP presidential candidate and professional sleazebag Joe Walsh.
In other words, imagine being Fox Business’ Stuart Varney, who engaged this week in one of the most shameless displays of the past three years of pro-President Trump sycophancy.
The cable news personality hosted Walsh Friday to discuss the latter’s supposedly very serious 2020 candidacy. During their conversation, Walsh attempted to draw a distinction between himself and the president, arguing that the latter is “unfit” to lead the country. To make this point, Walsh highlighted the fact that Trump is a habitual liar.
The president “lies virtually every time he opens his mouth,” the Trump-fanboi-turned-Trump-critic said — probably the most honest and accurate thing he has said in the past 10 years.
Varney demanded Walsh provide an example.
“I will give you an example just from yesterday and even his staff, Stuart, admitted that he lied this week when he said there were high-level phone calls between the United States and China. Trump said that repeatedly,” the no-hope 2020 candidate continued. “His staff came out yesterday and admittedly, admitted that the president of the United States lied to the world to manipulate the markets. I have a problem with that.”
Varney responded, “That’s not a lie. Let’s not get technical. If the man said, and he did, that high-level talks had been held with China, that is not a lie. They were held with China.”
Walsh countered, saying, “Stuart, he said there were high-level phone calls with Chinese officials. His staff admitted that was not true, that he lied in order to manipulate the market.”
He continued, asking the host directly if he believes Trump has lied.
“He exaggerates and spins,” said Varney.
“Okay,” said Walsh. “Do you believe he’s ever told the American people a lie?”
Varney responded with a flat, “No.” Varney tried later to turn the conversation around on Walsh, noting that the one-time congressman repeatedly accused former President Obama of being a secret Muslim.
“You lie. Didn’t you say that Obama was a Muslim? Is that a lie?” Varney asked.
“Yes, and I apologized for that, Stuart,” Walsh replied. “And also, Stuart, I apologized for helping to create the environment that put such a cruel, bigoted, unfit conman in the White House. I feel sort of responsible for this. I do.”
No one is forcing Varney to do this.
It’s okay to be a fan of Trump. It’s okay to defend him on a number of issues. But one cannot credibly say that he does not lie. Trump most absolutely lies. There are three parts to any Trump sentence: A verb, a noun, and a lie. He probably lies in his sleep. It’s sad to see someone claim otherwise who clearly knows better.
