The balding bank robber who earned a reputation as the “Granddad Bandit” has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for robbing two Virginia banks, as well as 24 others in 13 other states.
The Associated Press reports that a federal judge in Richmond also ordered 53-year-old Michael Francis Mara to pay more than $83,000 in restitution.
Mara pleaded guilty in February, and prosecutors and the defense agreed on the 25-year sentence then. Mara will not face charges in the other states.
The FBI nicknamed Mara — who is balding, has gray hair and wears glasses — the “Granddad Bandit” to help the public identify him during a nationwide campaign to apprehend him. Prosecutors said the robberies occurred from December 2008 to July 2010.
He was apprehended in Louisiana in August after a six-hour standoff with police that ended peacefully.
