Mitt Romney expected to announce Senate bid next week: Report

Mitt Romney is expected to announce his plan to run for U.S. Senate in Utah next week, according to a new report.

After hosting a strategy meeting earlier this week to discuss his options in the upcoming race to fill outgoing Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat, Romney is expected to announce his candidacy in the coming days, sources told Utah Policy.

The former Republican presidential candidate and Massachusetts governor will have to gather at least 28,000 signatures from registered Republicans before the April deadline to ensure that he is on the primary ballot. The GOP primary is in late June.

Romney carried the state of Utah during his failed 2012 presidential run and remains extremely popular in the state, which he now calls home.
