Substandard Show Notes, Episode 1.13 (Character Actors and Bit Players)

Endnotes and digressions from
the latest show:

* At the start of the show, Vic mentions how when we were kids, Fred Barnes would sometimes give us his amazing Redskins tickets. This is all true. As Elizabeth Bennett once said of Col. Brandon, Fred is the kindest and best of men.

* So it’s true that
I’m a Patriots sympathizer. Not a fan, exactly. Officially, I hate them. But I’m fascinated by
Coach Mumbles and how he has hacked the National. Football. League.

* And I’m even more fascinated by Ernie Adams. If you’ve never heard of Adams, you’re not alone. Plenty of players who work with him don’t even know who he is. He’s so mysterious that when he was working for Belichick in Cleveland, Browns owner Art Modell offered $10,000 to anyone who could tell him what Adams did for the team. And no one could do it.

What it boils down to is this: Ernie Adams is Bill Belichick’s personal skunkworks.

I highly recommend this ESPN piece on Adams,
“Who Is This Man?” And also
this great profile in Northwestern’s alumni magazine. Insanely awesome.

* In our wide-ranging discussion on great character actors we spend a lot of time talking about our friend, the great comedian, actor, and writer Larry Miller. In addition to everything else, he has a podcast and it’s much better than ours.
You should subscribe to it.

* Vic mentions actor Stephen Tobolowsky (who broke my heart in Memento). His podcast, The Tobolowsky Files, is fantastic. Tobolowsky also wrote a terrific essay for the New York Times back in 2010 about what it’s like to be a medium-famous character actor. You can read it
here.

* And pursuant to our Definitive Ranking of the Val Kilmer Productions, here’s that great Chuck Klosterman
profile of Kilmer from Esquire in 2005. I’m your huckleberry.

* As always, you can download the episode here and subscribe to the Substandard on iTunes or on Google Play. And you should go give us a five-star rating. We deserve it.
