NYPD: 2 con artists swindled $18K in lottery scam

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police are looking for two suspects in connection with a lottery ticket scam in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Police say one of the suspects approaches a victim and says they have a winning lottery ticket but cannot cash it because they are undocumented.

The other suspect then approaches and claims to know a lawyer who can help. Both suspects convince the victim to pay the lawyer in exchange for splitting the winnings.

Police say the pair scammed a total of $18,000 during nine separate incidents since March. The largest amount they swindled was $6,000 from an 81-year-old woman in Manhattan on June 26.

The last incident occurred Aug. 20.

Police ask anyone with information to call 1-800=577-TIPS.
