‘Buzzzzzz’: Fly distracts Cuccinelli during Va. gubernatorial debate

The main distraction for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli in Saturday’s debate was not his Democratic opponent Terry McAuliffe but rather a pesky fly that was buzzing around his head.

The Republican, who now serves as the state’s Attorney General, made light of this in a fundraising email to supporters obtained by Buzzfeed Monday.

“A doggone fly decided my head would be a fine landing pad!” he wrote.

“Terribly annoying,” the attorney general added. “Bzzzzzzzzzzz…”

Cuccinelli also joked that he was having a mental debate whether or not he should swat the fly on stage.

“So, while I’m thinking and talking at the same time, I’m also trying to decide things like: ‘can anyone else see this fly?’” he wrote. “Because if they can’t, and I start swiping at it, I’m going to look like I’ve lost my mind. And if they can see it in the room, can folks see it on T.V.”

“Should I take a swipe?” Cuccinelli continued. “What are my odds of actually getting this thing in one shot?”

Saturday’s debate, which was the first of five between the two candidates over the next few months, took place during the Virginia Bar Association convention in Hot Springs, Va. Topics discussed during the debate included transportation, tax cuts and social issues.
