Crawford reflects on life with 43

Clearing brush, clearing Bush

In October, we told you about “Crawford,” the new documentary film by David Modigliani that shines a light on President George W. Bush’s hometown and the effect his presidency (and residency) has had on the town’s 700-plus residents.

Well, the DVD is out now and, with it, a special-features bonus disc that has a retrospective on the movie and the town’s reaction to the whole ordeal — movie and Bus alike.

Looking back on his project, director Modigliani conceded that he went into the project assuming that most Crawford residents would be uneducated and that his movie would be mostly about President Bush. But he was soon proved wrong.

“The people in this town have much more interesting stories than the president’s,” he says.

After seeing the film, one resident was convinced that he could get the Bushes to watch the film. “I can drop it in the mail for ya,” he tells Modigliani. And what might the first family think of “Crawford”? “Aw, they’d think it was a hoot.”

For other residents, seeing the film brought back some memories of Bush’s time in Crawford.

“It just became almost a caricature and this shows that Crawford is really full of people who cared,” one said. “I didn’t really remember all these protests and all that stuff, but that happened,” another said. “Yeah, but I tried to stay in the house whenever [the protesters] were in town,” one resident said with a chuckle.
