A Secret Service agent was arrested and charged Friday with first-degree burglary and destruction of property, according to the Washington Post.
The agent, Arthur E. Baldwin, was off-duty when he allegedly kicked in the apartment door of an ex-girlfriend, who was home at the time, in Washington, D.C.
The Post reported that police records indicate the girlfriend was crying, shaking and “appeared to be in fear of her life” when officers appeared at the scene. The girlfriend also said the agent “wouldn’t leave me alone.”
A police report said that Baldwin had fled the scene before police arrived but returned and was arrested after turning over his Service weapon, which contained live ammunition.
At a hearing, the judge ordered Baldwin released from custody but said he has to stay away from the ex-girlfriend. A second hearing is scheduled for April 23, according to the Post.
Baldwin’s run in with the police comes after a long series of damaging incidents to the Secret Service’s reputation, including a 2012 prostitution scandal in Colombia and several breaches of the White House perimeter.
Most recently, the agency is investigating a March 4 incident wherein two agents, returning from a party at a Washington bar, drove into an area where there was a bomb threat investigation near the White House.
