BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — The driver of a vintage roadster is hospitalized in critical condition after being ejected from his car when it crashed into the median on a freeway in Burbank.

The California Highway Patrol says two other cars slammed into the classic Ford after the initial crash, causing a fire that prompted officials to shut down the northbound Interstate 5 early Friday.

CHP Sgt. Saul Gomez tells KABC-TV the roadster from the 1940s did not have seatbelts and was not required to. The driver suffered severe injuries.

The CHP is investigating the cause of the initial crash, which happened shortly after 2 a.m.

The freeway lanes were reopened after about two hours.
