P.G. nearing 30 homicides for 2011

Prince George’s County is getting closer to hitting the 30 homicide mark this year with the slaying of a Langley Park man. Police identified Abraham Felipe-Lopez, 32, as the county’s 28th homicide victim. He was found Saturday night at home on the 1400 block of Kanawha Street with trauma to his upper body, a spokesman said.

Police would not provide more details because detectives are still working to identify a suspect and establish a motive, said Prince George’s County police spokesman Cpl. Mike Rodriguez.

Prince George’s County police spokesman Cpl. Evan Baxter said there were seven slayings in March, but dismissed comparisons with a spree in January when the county saw 16 homicides.

In February, the county saw a respite for almost two weeks.

“We haven’t seen another spike like that this year,” Baxter said. “While we do tend to see slight elevation in numbers once the months get hotter, that’s yet to be seen.”

Baxter said despite the increase in homicides compared with 2010, other violent crimes — like rapes and robberies — are down.

Police consider 27 of the year’s slayings as criminal. One of the 28 homicides involved a homeowner shooting an intruder, Baxter said. Charges were not filed.
