In perhaps his final visit during his term in office, President Trump is expected to travel to Alamo, Texas, to praise the erection of a barrier along the nation’s southern border on Tuesday.
Having recently fulfilled his promise to construct 450 miles of border wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, Trump is expected to praise the development as a realization of one of his best-known 2016 campaign promises. Acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan called the progress a “remarkable achievement.”
The Biden transition team has offered mixed messages in terms of its plans for the new barrier. Biden has vowed not to authorize building any additional miles of border wall.
“There will not be another foot of wall constructed on my administration,” he said last August.
Still, the decision to halt the construction of the border wall could prove costly, according to Morgan.
“It’ll cost taxpayers billions of dollars, billions of dollars in settlement fees,” he said, noting that 270,000 tons of steel bollards have already been produced or are currently in production.
