The Trump administration is looking to expand immigrant detention space dramatically on the East Coast with plans to open a 1,400-bed facility in North Carolina by the year’s end, according to a new report.

Federal officials have brought in a private company, GEO Group, to convert Rivers Correctional Institution in Winton, North Carolina, into the agency’s newest detention center for illegal immigrants who have been arrested by ICE and are going through court proceedings to be deported, according to the New York Times. The prison closed in 2021, and planners are looking to get it up and running by December.
